Pleasure Island:
There’s Plenty of Night Life in Orlando
by Mark WhichardThe name
Disney is primarily associated with Mickey Mouse and
entertainment for children, but Disney World’s Pleasure
Island was built with adults in mind. Located in the
Downtown Disney section of the theme park, this
entertainment complex has eight themed night clubs which
cater in tastes ranging from improvisational comedy to
classic rock ’n’ roll to jazz to country. Here is a brief
guide to what is on offer at Pleasure Island.
8 Trax – Named
after the old eight track tape players that were popular
back in the ‘70s this club features the disco dance songs of
'70s and '80s including the hits of the Bee Gees, Donna
Summer and the Village People. If you are nostalgic for this
era, then check out the music at this club.
Adventurers Club
–This is an audience-participation comedy club featuring
tall tales of explorers' exploits. Disney World’s official
site advises guests to “Get into the fun of it and shout the
rallying cry: Kungaloosh!”
BET Soundstage™ Club
– Here is a great place to dance in a two-story soundstage
environment where a DJ plays songs ranging from the latest
hip-hop to old-school R&B favorites.
Mannequins Dance Palace
– It's a dance revolution at this pulsating, flashing
nightclub that includes a huge dance floor which actually
rotates as you gyrate to the throbbing sounds of
techno-trance tunes. House,
dance, urban street music, techno and other harder
electronic music is on tap in a warehouse/rave atmosphere.
Mannequins features three levels of partying areas, with a
huge rotating dance floor on the bottom. You have to be 21
or over to be admitted to this club.
Rock 'n' Roll Beach Club
– Do you like classic rock ‘n’ roll? If so you will enjoy
this beach party themed nightclub. Live bands play on
selected nights and they dish out a repertoire ranging from
classic hits to the newest sounds of today.
Motion – If you
enjoy music videos then a massive screen awaits you at
Motion. You can watch and dance to the most recent music
videos in this popular dance club.
The Comedy Warehouse
– Get in on the act at this warehouse where the tin roof
rattles with laughter. Catch the best in Improv comedy
provided by local and national comedians. You never know
what you are going to get at this venue.
Wildhorse Saloon:
This multi-purpose venue is based on the Wildhorse Saloon in
Nashville. PI's Wildhorse features a barbecue restaurant and
a country dance club. Like the one in Nashville it also has
a huge concert stage, sleek, wood dance floor, nightly live
entertainment and a schedule of special event concerts that
includes country music greats.
Pleasure Island is free and open to
the public from 10:00 a.m. until 7 p.m. for dining and
shopping. At 7 p.m., guests pay a cover charge for the whole
complex, and the night clubs open for business. Downtown
Disney offers free parking and valet parking for $6 after 7
p.m. The PI complex is restricted to those 18 and older
unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
